Press Release:

Fig. is pleased to present The Museum, a solo exhibition by Tokyo-based artist COBRA, from February 3 to March 10, 2019. The exhibition will be comprised of a sound installation, video, and sculptural works that entail paintings.

Working in a variety of mediums from video, photography, sound to painting and sculpture, COBRA incorporates his performative gestures executed with own body to investigate means of ‘imitating’ or ‘behaving’ in histories of art and contemporary cultures. For this exhibition, COBRA continues to apply his unique sense of humor to construct multiple ‘exhibitions’ by sculptural works entitled Rat Museum for Rat, of which are made with readymade mousetraps and acrylic-on-canvas paintings that the artist painted. As they are inviting potential audiences, the entrance door to these ‘traps’ are left open, and each mousetrap holds paintings of various subjects that are yellow, from cheese and rat to those referenced masterpieces in the art history. These works demonstrate COBRA’s perspective not just as an observer but more as a bystander that gazes phenomena and historical constructs surrounding the spectatorship in the histories of art and so-called ‘art-world.’

COBRA lives and works in Tokyo, Japan. Recent solo exhibitions include Freeze NY, Brennan and Griffin, New York (2017) and Domestic Fantasy, Art Center Ongoing, Tokyo (2016). He has also participated in the group exhibitions and screenings including Nature’s Way, Cooper Cole, Tronto, Canada (2018); The Saturday Object Theatre, Raster, Warsaw, Poland ( (2017); Summer Doors, Shane Campbell Gallery, Chicago (2017); Sayonara Jupiter, 356 Mission, Los Angels (2017); and Watching Things Burn, Springsteen, Baltimore (2015). COBRA is a founding member and a director of XYZ collective, artist-run-space in Tokyo, where he regularly organizes exhibitions in Tokyo since 2011
